Maritime Trip Day 01, August 23, 2010 - Our trip begins at Petoskey KOA, leaving at 9:15 A.M.--15 minutes ahead of schedule as everyone was ready and excited to begin! It was 67 degrees and overcast. Our first stop was at the Brutus Camp Deli for breakfast. Looks like a hunting lodge inside and the food is all homemade and delicious! .

Maritime Trip Day 02, August 24, 2010 65 degrees and overcast - Our second day was a travel day. We were up early (for us), had breakfast in our campers and left the Soo Locks Campground at 8:40 a.m. After paying the toll ($3.50 for us, $8.25 for the Roses) to cross the bridge into Canada, we arrived at the border/customs crossing.

Maritime Trip Day 03, August 25, 2010 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) and sunny - The campground's name was true to form—it was a Misty Morning on the Lake as we left at 9:45 am. Our first Canadian gas station experience cost $1.03 per liter or about $4.00 per gallon but it was Full Service! There was tons of construction along the way to Ottawa which makes

Maritime Trip Day 04, August 26, 2010 16 degrees C (62 degrees F) and partly cloudy (rain during the night) Early up today to catch the Grayline bus from our campground into Ottawa. Maritime Trip Day 05, August 27, 2010 10 degrees C (51 degrees F) and sunny. We were up early, again, to catch the Grayline bus into downtown Ottawa. We went to line up to watch the changing of the guard up close (including a full dress marching band with bagpipes). We had seen it yesterday from the tour bus but wanted

Maritime Trip Day 06, August 28, 2010 22 degrees C (72 degrees F) and sunny. Today we took a step back in time to visit the Rideau Canal waterways system. Built in the 1830s to open the waterways to commerce, the system has 47 locks raising/lowering the boats approximately 150 feet from beginning to end. Lockmasters continue

Maritime Trip Day 07, August 29, 2010 29 degrees C (85 degrees F) and sunny. The owner of the KOA, Dave Barton, stopped by our site this morning and presented us with 4 tickets to ride the Rockport Cruise out to Boldt Castle. We were thrilled as we had planned to do just that tour today! It was a pleasant half hour ride in the St. Lawrence Seaway through the

Maritime Trip Day 08, August 30, 2010 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) and sunny. We left the KOA after a pleasant outdoor breakfast at our garden campsite. We said goodbye & thank yous to the Bartons. It was a beautiful drive along the River's edge until we hit the expressway. The traffic around Montreal was heavy, especially with trucks. We gassed up at an oasis type

Maritime Day 09 August 31, 2010 VERY hot (36 degrees C/ 90 degrees F) & hazy. We left around 10:00 am after a breakfast together on the picnic table. It was already getting too hot to enjoy sitting outside! It was a short 3 hour drive to the Village of Levis, across the river from Quebec City. We are staying at a B&B named Au Gré Du Vent. It is a lovely 3 story

Maritime Trip Day 10, September 1, 2010 36 degrees C (94 degrees F) and hazy. The B&B breakfast was yummy even though the kitchen was all torn up. Jean and Michele are remodeling and the project was to be done in May but, just like at home, everything takes longer & costs more than planned! We had fresh made bread, jams, fruit, juices, yogurt with granola & berries,

We shared stories with them.

Maritime Trip Day 13 September 04, 2010 57 degrees F, rainy and windy. Going to Michigan for the Summer affords us the opportunity to miss the Hurricane season in Florida, so here we are in Metis Sur Mer, Quebec, Canada watching the wind and rain offered by Hurricane Earl! The folks here are thrilled as it has been nearly 30 days withoutrain and the water table was very low...
Maritime Trip Day 14 September 05, 2010 57 degrees F, sunny but windy. Hurricane Earl dropped much needed rain water here in the Gasp Peninsula but today it is sunny and cool. We were all up early so decided to leave ahead of schedule! By 8:30 we were rolling down the road with a 320 mile drive ahead. It did not start off well because we missed the first turn

Maritime Trip Day 15 September 06, 2010 57 degrees F, sunny and very windy. What a beginning to the day—ice cold water in the shower—brrrrrrr and we got to pay for the water! We left in Wayne's coach to drive to the Bay of Fundy and Hopewell Rocks about an hour from our campground. It turned out to be a lovely sunny, cool day with lots of wind (maybe remnants of

Maritime Trip Day 16 September 07, 2010 68 degrees F, cloudy. Luckily, the hot water was back on at the campground! After breakfast in the campers, we got gas and were on the road at 9:50 AM. There is a light drizzle and the temperature has dropped to 64°. We took the back roads through small towns to get to Prince Edward Island (PEI).
Maritime Trip Day 17 September 08, 2010 57 degrees F, drizzle There was a spectacular sunrise this morning over the bay where the campers are parked at the KOA in Cornwall! We were off today in the rental car to explore Prince Edward Island. We headed Northwest towards Cavendish about 50 kilometers away. The country side is lush and hilly with lots of farms and old country-type houses.

Maritime Trip Day 18 September 09, 2010 70 degrees F, mostly sunny. With no specific plans for today, we all slept in! We tried out our new egg poacher for breakfast. It worked pretty well and along with fresh baked cinnamon rolls from a bakery (we visited yesterday), we enjoyed a grand camper meal!
Maritime Trip Day 19 September 10, 2010 59 degrees F, cloudy. Today is Ferry Boat day so we were all up early to drive one hour to catch the "Confederation" from Woods Island, Prince Edward Island to Pictou, Nova Scotia (NS). The weather was a bit too cool to ride outside the entire trip but we all walked out and enjoyed the view.
Maritime Trip Day 20 September 11, 2010 54 degrees F, mostly sunny It seems quite odd to be remembering 9-11 from a foreign country, but people here remember it, too. We had a wonderful picnic breakfast with the red squirrel visiting for another free handout! How some creatures do adapt to human invasion!
Maritime Trip Day 21 September 12, 2010 51 degrees F, cloudy & drizzle on & off. Last night was the coldest night so far but we all stayed toasty warm in our campers, going to the shower house, however, was another story! We dressed in layers for warmth as most of our day would be spent outdoors.
Maritime Trip Day 22 September 13, 2010 51 degrees F, cloudy. Today's planned adventure was touring the Cabot Trail, a 290 kilometer (180 mile) drive around the Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It took us 8 hours! The Trail winds through stunning landscapes, along the Margaree River and through the rugged Highlands. The seashore is visible for most of the journey.
Maritime Trip Day 23 September 14, 2010 47degrees F, sunny and no wind! We slept in today as it was to be a short travel day. Although it is colder, it is sunny and pleasant with no wind blowing. Bill returned our rental car and we had a late breakfast at the camper. We pulled out about 10:30 and drove 3 hours to Scotia Pine Campground in Truro, NS.
Maritime Trip Day 24 September 15, 2010 57degrees F, cloudy (it rained during the night). Our campground was near a railroad track, so I enjoyed the sounds and rumblings from the train during the night. It reminded me of my childhood. We slept in, ate breakfast and left for Peggy's Cove at 11:30. We past the mid-point between the North Pole and the Equator, the 45 º Latitude—the same as Petoskey!
Maritime Trip Day 27 September 18, 2010 41 degrees F, Sunny. Happy Anniversary, Mom & Dad! We love you!
When I went to the shower house at 7:30 am, I could see my breath! They don't believe in heated 'washhouses' at the Canadian campgrounds we visited but the shower had plenty of hot water (for 50 cents!).
Maritime Trip Day 28 September 19, 2010 47 degrees F, Foggy, later sunny. No hurry today since most things to see open at 12:00 since it is Sunday. There was a heavy fog over the Bay when we got up but it cleared as the sun came out. The campsite has a great view of the water and the Hydro plant across the way.
Maritime Trip Day 29 September 20, 2010 47 degrees F, Still dark when we left, later partly cloudy/sunny. On the dark road by 5:45 am to Digby to catch the ferry to Saint Johns, New Brunswick. I now remember that I do not like riding/driving in the dark. The ship had very few vehicles and people on it compared to their capacity limit.
Maritime Trip Day 30 September 21, 2010 54 degrees F, Sunny and windy. Hurrah! We slept in today, ate a late breakfast, and headed out to the Kingsbrae Garden, a 5 minute drive from our campground. It was a beautiful, cool and sunny day to stroll through the many sections of the Garden.
Maritime Trip Day 32 September 23, 2010 55 degrees F, Sunny. As we prepared to leave Canada, we shopped at one last farmer's market. Located in the town square in St. Andrews by the Sea, it was an eclectic mix of homemade crafts, baked goods and farm produce. We stayed away from the produce, as much as we love it, because the border crossing web site says no fresh fruits or veggies are allowed in the US.
Maritime Trip Day 33 September 24, 2010 60 degrees F, Raining. It started raining in the middle of the night and continued until 11:00 am. We drove to a local Farmer's Market in Southwest Harbor, a community a short distance from the campground. It was a small gathering but we visited with a local cranberry grower who explained the picking process and the storage of fresh cranberries.
Maritime Trip Day 34 September 25, 2010 65 degrees F, Mostly Sunny. Acadia National Park (the first national park) was on the agenda for today. This area was created 500 million years ago by glaciers and erosion. We purchased a CD at the Visitor's Center for $13.00 that included a map. Today was a "free entry day".
Maritime Trip Day 35 September 26, 2010 51 degrees F, Raining. We started the day with "The Best Ever Blueberry Pancake Breakfast"--at least that is what the KOA at Bar Harbor called it. It would have been a nice outdoor event except it was raining—so we got it to go and ate it in the warmth of the Rose's camper! Actually the Maine blueberries are little and quite delicious!
Maritime Trip Day 36 September 27, 2010 50 degrees F, Wet from raining. We left the campground early (8:00 am) and stopped at a McDonald's for drive through breakfast! Bill and Wayne wanted to stop at the Sabre Boat Manufacture and see the plant in operation. After their one hour tour, they both walked away without a purchase—Hurrah!
Maritime Trip Day 37 September 28, 2010 57 degrees F, Partly Cloudy. Today was a relaxing day at the Twin Mountains KOA, sleeping late and doing laundry until 1:00 when we got all dressed up. We left in the van to enjoy High Tea at the magnificent Mount Washington Hotel, built in 1902, in nearby Bretton Woods, NH.
Maritime Trip Day 38 September 29, 2010 64 degrees F, Overcast. Leaving Twin Mountain KOA at 8:20, we stopped for breakfast at Munroe's Family Restaurant just a few minutes from our campground. Enjoyed the Redneck Benny—a homemade biscuit with 2 sausage patties, 2 poached eggs, and sausage gravy plus grits! We drove on through magnificent views of the mountains and many more scenes of Fall colors through Stowe, Vermont to get to Burlington.
Maritime Trip Day 39 September 30, 2010 57 degrees F, Raining all day and all night. After breakfast in the campers, we headed into Lake Placid to do a little shopping, ice cream eating at Ben and Jerry's, and grocery shopping at the Price Chopper. Lake Placid is the home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.
Maritime Trip Day 40 October 1, 2010 57 degrees F, Still Raining. This is our 40th day on the road and I'm wondering if we should have built an ark—there are flash flood warnings all around us! We decide to head out anyway because the rain is letting up further south from here. Breaking down camp in a drizzle is no fun but at least it was not hard, pelting rain. By 11:00 am we head for Rome, New York. The scenery in the Adirondack Mountains was picturesque with waterfalls roaring at every turn and the Ausable River overflowing its banks everywhere.
Maritime Day 41 October 2, 2010 47 degrees F, Sunny. We are staying at the Villages at Turning Stone Campground, an Oneida Indian Nations RV Resort. There is a huge Casino just down the road from here, (not normally our thing but it was the only campground around this area). It is a quiet place with our sites on a pond full of Canadian Geese and Mallard Ducks.
Maritime Day 45 October 6, 2010 50 degrees F, Overcast. Breakfast out at Cracker Barrel got a 4-0 vote, so off we went at 9:30. Onward to the Civil War Battlefield at Antietam at Sharpsburg, Maryland. The battle fought here was the bloodiest one-day battle of the Civil War with 23,000 men killed, wounded or missing at the end of September 17, 1862.
Maritime Day 46 October 7, 2010 57 degrees F, Sunny. After breakfast in the campers, we drove to Lexington, Virginia to tour the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and the George C. Marshall Museum. Bill is wearing shorts in anticipation of warm weather! After touring the VMI Museum we were quite impressed with the 171 year old university.
Maritime Day 47 October 8, 2010 57 degrees F, Sunny & getting warmer today! Today was a travel day. We left Statesville at 10:15 heading for James Island, South Carolina near Charleston. The drive went fairly smooth especially for expressway traffic. We stopped for lunch at a Perkins in Summerville. We also found a BiLo grocery store to restock our staples.
Maritime Day 49 October 10, 2010 64 degrees F, Sunny topping off at 87 degrees today. We slept in today ‘til 8:00, had breakfast at the campers then headed down the road at 11:00 to visit the Charleston Tea Plantation about 18 miles from here. It opens at noon so we had to wait a while at the gate.
Maritime Day 50(Last Day) October 11, 2010 78 degrees F, Sunny 88 degrees by 11:00. We left the Coastal RV Resort at 11:00 am. Although there was no shade, this was a new, clean and modern campground with all paved sites and bushes separating each site. Just before we left, Lorene showed off her newly knitted scarf.
